Building History
The old Richmond Inn (originally the Grothaus House) was built by Ferdinand Grouhaus in 1892. The house was built with the help of South-End Dutch wood craftsmen and masons who lived in the neighborhood at the time. The home features seven unique dining rooms and three fireplaces with Italian decorative tiles popular in the late 1900s. The extensive stained glass wall located at the casher’s station originated from the ‘Rolan-Swisher’ building on North 10th and E Streets. The unique chandelier in the North Dining Room originates from the home of Micajah Henley, the inventor of the roller-skate, patented in 1881. This fixture was converted from gas to electric use. The custom designed stained glass fixtures in the restaurant have been the work of craftsmen from Richmond and Cincinnati. Since opening in 1984 the Inn has expanded its bar side dining area and has added a banquet facility.
Chef Galo
The old Richmond Inn’s Chef Galo Molina was born in Quito, Ecuador where he often urged his mother to “add more flavor!” His professional experience began at the Princess Hotels in Bermuda.
Richmond ultimately became the beneficiary of Chef Galo’s culinary training in England, Paris and posts at several prestigious restaurants on the east coast. As owner and head chef of the old Richmond Inn, Chef Galo Molina makes customer satisfaction the main course.
“A good career takes a lot of hours. But its worth it when you hear people say, ‘I was in your place and it was wonderful and we had a beautiful dinner’.” states Galo in a local publication.
